Creating realistic routines that work is essential for personal growth and productivity. It’s important you do not overwhelm yourself with unachievable tasks, as this often leads to procrastination.

I know you admire your mentor who reads a book of over 400 pages a week or a friend who starts his day at 4 am and seems to complete his tasks efficiently. You wish to be like them, (sure enough, you can) but find yourself struggling, losing motivation and eventually procrastinating. However, I want you to understand that these habits weren’t built overnight. They were developed gradually with persistent efforts and improvement.

Here’s how you can achieve similar success,

Your mentor didn’t start by reading 400-page books in a day. Initially, they might have taken two weeks or more to finish such a book, by breaking it into smaller chunks. As their brain adapted to this habit, they gradually increased the pace, eventually setting a goal to finish such book in a week.

They started small, persisted and improved over time. They never gave up like you who are about to now. Don’t give up, yet! Follow closely.

Brian Tracy said “The time is going to pass anyway, the only question is how you use it and where you’re going to be at the end of the weeks and months that pass.” So, instead of feeling unmotivated and procrastinating, break your tasks into smaller, achievable chunks and tackle them immediately.

Your mentor reads 50 pages a day but you can only read 5, do it immediately. Read 5 pages a day and finish the book in two weeks instead of complaining about not finishing it in a week. Set realistic deadlines and constantly pressure yourself to meet them. These deadlines will help create a sense of urgency in you, thereby helping you stay focused on your goals.

Your friend wakes at 4 am but you struggle to do so, adjust your schedule gradually. Go to bed earlier and start waking up at 5 or 6 am. Begin your tasks immediately upon waking up. The time will pass regardless, but let it pass with you making progress rather than grumbling over unmet goals. Make every minute count.

By setting realistic goals, breaking tasks into achievable bits and gradually building these habits, you can achieve the success you admire in others. Embrace your journey and celebrate your progress no matter how little. These steps will not only help you develop sustainable habits but also keep you motivated and productive in the long run.
